Okay, so I’ve had one of those days where absolutely nothing was accomplished on any kind of scale. Instead the day was spent figuring thing out and just plain trying to forget the world. You will be amazed what you can find when you just surf the internet.
The find of the day is a BBC Two (Scotland) mini-series aired in 1994. A drama that takes place mainly in a mental ward of a hospital. It all revolves around Ready Eddie McKenna and a radio station that he is given to start up for the people in the ward.
In truth this would never be something I would watch. It is a drama, I’m not a really a drama watcher. It is long… really really long, six episodes that are about 50 minutes each. You do the math. Plus it is old and sometimes that makes it difficult to watch something (which seems silly since this is only 14 years old, but you can always feel it when you watch stuff like this). There was a draw though.
I made it no secret in the last post that I’ve found David Tennant to be a great watch. It then comes as no surprise that he shows up in this. He is young and still the same hyperactive man. So when I found someone who had the who series up on YouTube I simply had to give the show a go.
David Tennant’s character Campbell is a riot. 19 years old and in the ward for manic depression (noticing a theme in the characters he plays really well). He also gets to let his accent hang all out. he also seems to have a nice singing voice.
Yet this post is about the series. Not bad all together, I actually rather liked it; which is really weird. Maybe it was all the accents everywhere. I loved the mental patients as well. If this hadn’t been about a mental ward, well it wouldn’t have been much of a show would it.
I did black out for bits though. The story line didn’t really hold me, it was all the crazy running around that really captured my attention. Otherwise Eddie’s story really didn’t hold any appeal for me, it was all about the people he met, they were the real interest.
So if you have nothing else to do and have a day to waste, check it out (that is Takin’ over the Asylum). If not I really wouldn’t go out of your way to track it down. It is one of those things that is a great boredom filler but not something to get your knickers in a twist about… I can believe I just typed that. Please ignore that last line.
